Industry / Certification, licence & authorisation

Certification, licence and authorisation.
All in the same learning platform.

AlonLearn is the learning platform professions with formal requirements use to keep certification, licence and authorisation valid — auditors, healthcare staff, offshore workers, lawyers, crane operators and optometrists. Continuing education hours and points are calculated automatically, validity periods are flagged before expiry, and documentation for the Financial Supervisory Authority, the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision or the Petroleum Safety Authority is one click away. The Norwegian Optometric Association and the Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants build their continuing education module on AlonLearn.

CHALLENGES

What daily life looks like for certification-required professions

When a certification, licence or authorisation is a prerequisite for doing the job, managing validity isn't an HR spreadsheet — it's business-critical operations. Here are four problems we see again and again before AlonLearn is in place.

event_busy

Many parallel validity deadlines

An offshore worker may have HSE valid 1 year, electrical 2 years, water rescue 3 years, plus emergency and first aid — all at once. Excel can't keep up when 200 staff have different expiries.

gavel

Regulators require reportable documentation

The Financial Supervisory Authority, the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision, the Petroleum Safety Authority and the Supervisory Council for Legal Practice carry out spot checks. Certification, licence or authorisation must be documentable in minutes — not after a week of searching folders.

calculate

Requirements that count differently

Auditors need 120 hours over 3 years. Optometrists register points over a period. Lawyers need 80 hours over 5 years, including 5 in ethics. Every profession counts its own way — and every staff member needs to make it.

Expired licence = work stops

A crane operator without a valid certificate can't work. An auditor without up-to-date hours can't sign. The risk isn't just administrative — it stops operations, invoicing and projects. Alerting before expiry is business-critical.

HOW ALONLEARN SOLVES IT

One module for certification, licence and authorisation

The competence requirements module in AlonLearn is built to handle all three formal approval types in the same data model — with three units of measure (hours, points, validity) and automatic calculation per occupational group.

1

Competence ledger per employee

Each employee sees their own competence account — current certificate status, totalled continuing education hours or points, and expiry dates. The gap analysis shows what\'s missing before the next inspection.

2

Learning paths that cover the whole requirement

Build paths that cover the whole requirement profile — ethics, HSE, subject-specific and mandatory updates — in one structured sequence. The employee knows what\'s left, and the competence manager sees the progress.

Learning paths in AlonLearn — multi-step competence development tailored to certification requirements
3

Dashboard for the competence manager

The competence manager sees the whole company\'s status on one board — who is in good standing, who is missing, who has a certificate expiring within 90 days. Export to the regulator is one click.

THREE UNITS, ONE MODEL

Hours, points or validity — all requirements in the same data model

Auditors are measured in hours (120 over 3 years). Optometrists register points over a period. Offshore workers are measured by validity — HSE certificate valid right now. AlonLearn models all three in the same data model, so a complex requirement profile with combined rules doesn\'t require special code.

An offshore worker can have all three at once: valid HSE certificate (binary), 40 hours of annual professional update (hours), and 3 of 5 specialisations covered (count). The platform calculates status without manual entry.

Profession Type of approval Regulator Requirement
Auditor Certification The Financial Supervisory Authority 120 hours of continuing education over 3 years, at least 1 course in VAT, foreign tax and bookkeeping
Lawyer Licence Supervisory Council for Legal Practice 80 hours over 5 years, including at least 5 hours in ethics
Doctor / dentist / nurse Authorisation Norwegian Board of Health Supervision Varies by specialty — often both hours and specific courses
Optometrist Authorisation Norwegian Optometric Association / Norwegian Board of Health Supervision Points for courses over a period (NOF model)
Offshore worker Certificate Petroleum Safety Authority HSE course (1 year), electrical (2 years), water rescue (3 years), first aid, emergency — all simultaneously valid
Crane operator Certificate Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority / certifying body Valid crane certificate per class (G1 mobile crane, G2 tower crane etc.), validity 2–5 years
Electrician offshore Certificate + licence DSB / Petroleum Safety Authority Trade certificate + valid safety courses (HSE, electrical safety, emergency)
HSE coordinator / safety rep Certification Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority 40-hour basic course in working environment, refresher when regulations change

The list isn\'t exhaustive. Talk to us about the requirement profile for your specific occupational group — we\'ve probably handled something similar.

BLENDED LEARNING

Certification-required courses are often blended by nature

HSE basics can be taken digitally. Practical water rescue must be done in person. Regulatory updates suit live webinar. AlonLearn covers all three formats in the same competence ledger — so the certificate, licence or authorisation can always be documented as a whole.

school

eLearning for what can be revisited digitally

Regulatory updates, ethics modules, HSE basics and refreshers — anything that doesn't require physical practice is delivered as self-paced eLearning with a certificate on completion.

Live webinar for subject talks and updates

Changes in law and regulation, new regulator practice or industry news — conveyed as live webinar with Q&A. Tracked into the same competence ledger as the rest.

Physical courses with QR attendance

Practical courses like crane training, water rescue or first aid must be done in person. QR attendance registers the visit straight onto the person's competence account — as at NOF.

verified

One competence ledger across all

eLearning, webinar, physical courses and external activities are gathered on the person's competence account. Certification, licence and authorisation are seen in one overview — for both the employee and the competence manager.

Customer case — Norwegian Optometric Association (NOF)

«We register continuing education points for all our members over a period — with QR attendance at physical courses. AlonLearn handles the whole chain from sign-up to points on the competence account.»

Norwegian Optometric Association
Uses AlonLearn for authorisation-required continuing education

The Norwegian Optometric Association uses AlonLearn to register continuing education points over a given period for authorised optometrists in Norway. Each course has a point value, and when an optometrist completes the course the points are placed automatically on the member\'s competence account. At physical courses, attendance is registered via QR — the participant is scanned in, the points tick in the same day. The same model is used by the Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants for auditors\' 120-hour continuing education and by the Norwegian Nurses Organisation for 120,000+ nurses\' professional days.

HOW YOU GET STARTED

Onboarding tailored to certification-required professions

The most important thing for a certification-required profession is that no employee works with an expired approval — and that documentation is ready at inspection. We set up requirement profiles, alert rules and dashboards together with you, and connect HR systems and course providers.

Common questions about certification, licence and authorisation

What's the difference between certification, licence and authorisation?
The terms are often used interchangeably but are distinct legal concepts. Certification confirms that a person has passed an exam or course series (auditor, accountant, crane operator, HSE coordinator). A licence is a time-limited permission from a regulator to practise the profession — typical for lawyers from the Supervisory Council. Authorisation is a formal approval, often given by the state, that grants the right to use the title and practise the profession (doctor, dentist, nurse, optometrist — all granted by the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision). What all three share is the requirement for ongoing continuing education and documentation — and AlonLearn handles all three in the same data model.
Which professions require certification in Norway?
Many. In health: doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives, optometrists, physiotherapists — all with authorisation from the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision. In law and finance: lawyers (licence from the Supervisory Council), auditors and accountants (certification, the Financial Supervisory Authority). In offshore and industry: offshore workers, drill floor workers/drilling operators, deck operators, process technicians, mechanics, electricians/automation technicians offshore, crane operators, HSE coordinators and safety reps — all with certificates and licences from the Petroleum Safety Authority, the Norwegian Labour Inspection Authority or industry bodies. Common to all is the ongoing requirement for continuing education and documentation.
How are continuing education points registered — as at the Norwegian Optometric Association?
The Norwegian Optometric Association (NOF) uses AlonLearn to register points over a period. Every course has a defined point value, and when an optometrist completes the course the points are placed automatically on the person's competence account. At physical courses, attendance is registered via QR — the participant is scanned in on entering the room, the points tick in the same day. The same principle works for auditors' continuing education hours, lawyers' CPD hours or healthcare professional days.
How is documentation exported to the regulator or employer?
Each employee has a competence account in AlonLearn showing all completed courses, current certificate status, expiry dates and total hours or points. The documentation can be exported as PDF (competence statement), CSV (for further reporting) or fetched via API for integration with HR systems. At an inspection from the Financial Supervisory Authority, the Norwegian Board of Health Supervision or the Petroleum Safety Authority, the competence manager finds the documentation immediately — no searching spreadsheets or paper archives.
How are employees and competence managers alerted before a certificate expires?
AlonLearn sends automatic alerts 90, 60 and 30 days before a certificate, licence or authorisation expires — both to the employee and to the competence manager. The competence manager's dashboard also shows an overview of all employees with certificates expiring within 6 months, so new course rounds can be planned well before the gap occurs.
Can AlonLearn handle different requirement profiles for different occupational groups in the same organisation?
Yes. An offshore company can have offshore workers with Petroleum Safety Authority requirements, electricians with trade certificates + safety courses, crane operators with certificates per crane class, and HSE coordinators with the 40-hour basic course — all on the same installation. AlonLearn has a generic competence module with three units of measure: hours (auditor 120 hrs/3 yrs), points (NOF model) and validity (certificate valid right now). One employee can have requirements in all three dimensions simultaneously.
How are physical courses and practical exercises requiring attendance handled?
Physical courses like water rescue, crane training, first aid or HSE gatherings are registered with QR on attendance — the same method the Norwegian Optometric Association uses. The participant is scanned in at the course, and attendance is registered immediately on the competence account. Practical courses can also be set up as learning paths with both eLearning preparation and physical completion — shared tracking, one certificate.
Which customers use AlonLearn for certification-required professions today?
The Norwegian Optometric Association (NOF) uses AlonLearn to register continuing education points for its members — with QR attendance at physical courses. The Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants (DNR) builds its statutory continuing education module (120 hours per 3 years, required by the Financial Supervisory Authority) on AlonLearn. The Norwegian Nurses Organisation (NSF) runs the continuing education operation for 120,000+ nurses on AlonLearn. The model is the same regardless of profession: requirement profile + automatic calculation + alerts + regulator-ready documentation.
