Industry / Trade unions

The learning platform for trade unions.
LMS, course system and sign-up system in the same tool.

AlonLearn is the learning platform trade unions and workers' organisations use to deliver targeted member courses, learning paths for union representatives and billable professional courses — with access control per professional group. Often called a course system or sign-up system by members and representatives. The Norwegian Nurses Organisation runs its entire course and continuing education operation on AlonLearn with 120,000+ users.

CHALLENGES

What course life looks like in a trade union today

Many trade unions have a sign-up system that doesn't talk to the course system, and a learning platform that doesn't know who's a member. Tens of thousands of members, many professional groups, union representative training that runs over time, and professional courses where the employer is often the one to pay — here are four problems we see again and again before AlonLearn is in place.

groups

Many thousand members, fragmented administration

A trade union or workers' organisation often has tens of thousands of members spread across local chapters, professional groups and union representatives. Excel lists and email lists aren't enough when the course catalogue needs to reach the right audience.

route

Learning paths for union representatives need structure

Union representative training isn't one course but a multi-step path with gatherings, eLearning and physical courses. It must be documented who has completed what — without manual follow-up.

The employer often pays

Many professional courses are invoiced to the employer, not the member. That requires billable courses with EHF, card, Vipps and a refund flow — and a payment solution that doesn't spray emails to the wrong recipient.

Professional groups need their own course administrators

Different professional groups and local chapters need to offer courses to their own members — but not see or edit others'. That requires access control that separates member, union representative and course administrator per group.

HOW ALONLEARN SOLVES IT

One platform for the whole course value chain

Member courses, union representative training, professional continuing education and billable employer-paid courses — all in AlonLearn, with access control that lets every professional group run its own part.

1

Audience-driven course offerings

Send courses automatically to the right professional group, occupational category or local chapter based on member data. Nurses get their professional courses, midwives theirs — no manual one-by-one enrolment.

My page with course history

Every member sees their own course history, upcoming activities and certificates on My page. Union representatives also see their ongoing learning paths. The member owns their own learning — without calling administration.

PERMISSIONS PER PROFESSIONAL GROUP

Each professional group administers its own courses — without seeing the others

Roles in AlonLearn separate member, union representative and course administrator. Course administrators can be assigned to a specific professional group or local chapter and can then create, publish and report on their own courses — without stepping into each other\'s areas.

The Norwegian Nurses Organisation runs 350 course administrators across 35 internal units in exactly this way. Central management doesn\'t have to be a bottleneck — professional groups operate themselves.

AUDIENCES

Built for the trade union's two most important audiences

Tailored training isn't just convenient — it raises member value, holds existing members and makes the union attractive to new ones. AlonLearn separates by member data so union representatives and members with professional interests each get their relevant course catalogue, automatically.

AUDIENCE 1

Union representatives

Union representatives need a breadth of skills — leadership, organisational structure, communication and negotiation. AlonLearn lets you build learning paths that strengthen these areas over time, not as standalone courses at random times.

  • check_circleProfessional strength in leadership, organisation, communication and negotiation
  • check_circleLearning paths tailored to the role — not scattered standalone courses representatives have to find themselves
  • check_circleCareer development — documented competence that qualifies for larger union roles
  • check_circleBetter representation of members — representatives with the right toolkit are more effective

AUDIENCE 2

Members with professional interests

Members in evolving professional fields must keep up with new knowledge, regulations and practice. AlonLearn delivers profession-specific continuing education directly to the right members — based on occupational group, geography or tag.

  • check_circleDirect relevance — courses match the member\'s field, not a generic member offer
  • check_circleContinuous professional development — new trends, research and practice available on a rolling basis
  • check_circleMy page with full overview — course history, invoices, messages and certificates in one place
  • check_circleCareer growth — documented professional competence that opens doors for advancement

When the right member gets the right course offering, member value rises. It holds existing members and makes the union attractive to new ones — a targeted course catalogue is one of the most direct levers a trade union has for growing membership.

BLENDED LEARNING

Union representative training is classic blended learning

Few types of training are as naturally blended as the trade union's own. Union representative training combines self-paced subject material, physical gatherings at conference venues and follow-up webinars. Member courses are blended in the same way — the professional agreement as eLearning, professional discussions as live webinar. AlonLearn brings it into one learning path, with shared tracking and one certificate.

school

Self-paced eLearning as preparation

Members take the professional agreement, HSE basics, role training or preparatory material at their own pace — often weeks before the gathering. Everyone is at the same level when the physical day arrives.

videocam

Live webinar with subject talks and Q&A

Streaming via Vimeo with chat, Q&A and polls. Perfect for professional deep dives, follow-up of union representatives between gatherings, or monthly member webinars that don't require travel.

apartment

Physical gatherings with QR attendance

Conference venues, congresses or local chapter courses — sign-up, capacity and certificate are in place. QR attendance reports back to the same learning path as the eLearning.

verified

Shared tracking and one certificate

Every format is aggregated into one learning path. A union representative doesn't get five small certificates on the receipt — they get one certificate for union representative training when the whole path is completed.

WHAT A BLENDED PATH LOOKS LIKE

One path, four formats, one certificate

Inside a learning path, union representatives see all their steps in a row — the eLearning on the professional agreement that must be completed before the gathering, the date of the gathering itself with QR attendance, and the closing webinar two weeks later. Each block has its own status, and the whole path unlocks the certificate.

Administration sees the same picture from the other side — who is still on the eLearning, who completed the gathering, who is missing the webinar. No more spreadsheets.

HOW YOU GET STARTED

Onboarding tailored to trade unions

The most important thing in a union is that the right member gets the right course offering — not that everyone sees everything. We set up audiences, professional groups and permissions together with you, and connect the integrations unions need: member register, EHF invoicing, Vipps and card.

Common questions from trade unions

Is AlonLearn an LMS, a learning platform, a course system or a sign-up system?
All of them. The terms are used interchangeably in trade unions and workers' organisations: some call it an LMS (Learning Management System), others a learning platform, course system or sign-up system — depending on who asks. AlonLearn covers all these roles in the same tool: sign-up and payment for the individual course, course administration for course managers, and a full learning platform with learning paths, eLearning, tracking and certificates. You don't need one system for sign-up and another for course delivery — everything happens in AlonLearn.
Which trade unions and workers' organisations use AlonLearn today?
The Norwegian Nurses Organisation (NSF) is one of our largest customers with 120,000+ users, 350 course administrators spread across 35 internal organisations, and around 1,000 annual courses. The Norwegian Optometric Association (NOF) and the Norwegian Institute of Public Accountants (DNR) also use AlonLearn as a learning platform and course system for member courses, continuing education and professional training.
Can different professional groups administer their own courses without seeing each other's?
Yes. Access control in AlonLearn lets you define course administrators per professional group, local chapter or occupational category. A course administrator in one professional group can create, publish and report on their own courses — but doesn't see courses belonging to other groups. Union representatives and members each get their own roles with correspondingly limited access.
How are learning paths handled for union representatives with both digital and physical steps?
Learning paths in AlonLearn let you combine eLearning, webinar and physical gatherings in a structured programme. Basic union representative training can start with self-paced eLearning, continue with a live webinar, and end with a physical gathering — all tracked in one path. The certificate is issued automatically when the whole path is completed, and the participant list is shared regardless of format.
Can the employer be billed directly when the member signs up for a professional course?
Yes. At sign-up, the member can choose to pay themselves (Vipps or card) or specify the employer to pay. An invoice is then sent as EHF straight to the employer's accounting system — without the administration having to handle email chains or manual invoices. Refunds and credit notes happen in the same flow.
How is course content targeted to the right members?
Member data drives who sees which courses. Nurses on the intensive care ward get their professional courses automatically, midwives theirs, and union representatives see their own course catalogue in addition. Audiences can be set up based on occupational category, professional group, geography, seniority or any member attribute — so the right course reaches the right person without manual selection.
Can members see their own course history and download certificates themselves?
Yes. Each member has a My page where they see all courses they've completed, can download certificates as PDF, and see any ongoing learning paths. Continuing education hours are summed automatically per member — important for unions with formal continuing education requirements.
Is EHF invoicing, Vipps and card payment supported in the same checkout?
Yes. Stripe handles card, Vipps is offered as an alternative, and EHF goes straight to the employer's accounting system via the public electronic trade format. The checkout is the same for the member regardless of payment method — the union has one flow to maintain, not three.
